This Thursday the Millennium Symphonic BandWind Ensemble will welcome our guest, the Greenwood Lakes MS Band, to a Pre-MPA Performance at Millennium Middle School in Millennium Hall at 7PM.  The concert is presented as part of the students’ preparation for the Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment (MPA) next week.  MPAs are events used to evaluate student performance as an ensemble as measured against a set of standards (“standardized testing” for band).  A panel of area band directors will be present to give advice to directors after the performance to aid in student preparation.  Consequently, this performance is extremely important!
This performance is free and open to the public, no tickets needed.  The itinerary for the event is as follows:
6:25PM    Student report time (to the band room)
6:30PM    Attendance
6:35PM    Warm-up
6:50PM    Take initial performance positions
7:00PM    Performance begins! (MMS Symphonic Band, GLMS Symphonic Band, MMS Wind Ensemble)  each band will be performing 3 pieces

Come out and hear the results of these hard working and talented students!!

I hope that everyone had some amount of time to recharge during Spring Break!  I hope so, because these next 2 weeks are going to be very busy!  Student will be bringing home info today about the following events:
  • Thursday, March 30, 7PM- Pre-MPA Performance @ Millennium MS
  • Thursday & Friday, April 6 & 7, MPA Performance @ University HS (Orange City)
These events are required events (as are all rehearsals & performances) and are a significant part of the 4th quarter grade (so much so, that a student would have a difficult time passing the class if they do not attend).
MPA (Music Performance Assessment) is much like the “Standardized test” for music groups.  The key exception is that students are rated on their live group performance rather than how they do individually on a paper or computer test.  The concert this Thursday is occurring to allow students the opportunity to perform in an auditorium for an audience as a preparation for when they do it in front of a panel of judges at MPA.  We will also be welcoming the band from Greenwood Lakes MS to also perform at this event.  Additionally, we have invited area band directors to come and give comments to aid us in our final preparations.  This performance is open to families and friends and IS NOT a ticketed event (it’s free!)
Next week, both Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble will travel to University HS in Orange City to perform for their MPA adjudication.  The performance schedule is as follows:
  • Wind Ensemble: Thursday, April 6, 5:15PM performance time
  • Symphonic Band: Friday, April 7, 11:00AM performance time
Each band will be bussed to the event and will miss a portion of the school day.  Permission slips will be distributed tomorrow in class and will be due this Friday, March 31.  MPA performances are also free and open to the public.  Symphonic Band members will also need money for lunch for the day of their performance.  We will need several parent chaperones for this event (indicate your availability on the permission slip).
Parents, it is very important that students reinforce their parts by playing at home!  Please ask your student each day this week “have you played your instrument this evening?”  We will be going over many details in class that will be forgotten if they are not reinforced at home!
Thank you for your help and support of your student’s success!  Please let me know if you have any questions!
Josh Langston,
Band Director
Millennium MS

Thanks for nothing, Hurricane Matthew!

First and foremost, we hope that you and your families are safe and sound in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.   In the grand scheme of things, it looks like our area was extremely fortunate to avoid the storm’s full force.  So, we are left to deal with the comparatively minor problem of rescheduling the Fall Concert originally planned for last Friday.
After much analysis of the various factors potentially affecting the bands’ ability to perform this week (exams, make-up days, family vacations, etc.), I am pleased to announce that we have been able to successfully reschedule the Fall Concert for this Friday, October 14.  Please see the description below for all details pertaining to this performance!
Members of the Symphonic BandJazz Band, & Wind Ensemble are currently preparing for this week’s premier performance!  The Fall Band Concert will take place on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 7:00PM.  See below for more details about this concert and how you can help get your student ready to perform successfully!
  • Have students try on their uniforms at home to ensure that they fit properly.  Inform Mr. Langston if there are any issues so that they may be remedied.
  • DO NOT CUT ANY MATERIAL from any of the uniforms!  If the length of dresses or pants needs to be adjusted, please use a temporary hem.
  • All portions of the uniforms are machine washable EXCEPT FOR the tuxedo jackets, ties, & cummerbunds.
  • There will NOT be tickets issued for this concert.  It will be a free, general admission performance.  (And thank you for all of the time & money you’ve invested so far this 9-weeks to set your student up for success!!!)
  • The concert will be on Friday, October 14 @ 7PM in Millennium Hall.  Student report time will be 6:25PM.
  • Encourage your student to prepare by practicing at home!  Please remind them that the success of an ensemble stems from how all members prepare!
We look forward to seeing you Friday night!!!

Middle School Night 2016!!!

Posted on

The annual Middle School Night Performance is upon us!  This performance will take place this Friday, Sept.9, 2016.

Please find the information pertinent to this performance listed below.  Students will also be bring in this information home on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

This performance is part of students’ performance grade for the 1st 9-week period.

  • Students should wear their band uniform to school, change into their band uniform during their P.E. or dance class, or change during the time right after dismissal.
    • The band uniform consists of: Band shirt, black long pants, black socks, black shoes
    • We will be using the same band shirt that has been provided. The other items must be provided by the student.
  • Students will walk as a group between Millennium and Seminole HS before and after the game.  Students must be picked up from the car ramp @ Millennium MS. (Students will leave their book bags in the Millennium band room.)
  • Students will be provided dinner by the SHS band parents.  Dinner consists of hot dog, chips, & a drink.  A vegetarian option of a PBJ is available; let Mr. Langston know if you want this option.
  • Students MIGHT be provided the opportunity to purchase a Chik-fil-a sandwich and a drink during the 3rd quarter break.  This is the only reason that students might need spending money.
  • While at the game, students must remain with the band AT ALL TIMES.  They will not be permitted to sit in the stands with family members or friends.
  • When not in the stands, students will be required to remain within the “MS Containment” area (near the end of the track on the home side).
  • This activity is designed to allow students to experience one aspect of participating in a high school band program.  They are expected to stay for the entire football game so that they experience the many activities within this type of performance.
  • Students that have indicated that they need to leave after the halftime performance will be dismissed as soon as Mr. Langston can separate the Millennium students from the Seminole & Sanford students.
  • If a student is being signed out after halftime, it is expected that they will be leaving the game.  Students SHOULD NOT be signed out so that they may watch the remainder of the game from elsewhere in the stadium.
  • Many of the times listed on the itinerary below are TENTATIVE.  Due to the nature of a football game, I cannot guarantee the rehearsal, performance, and pick-up times to be exact.  Times given are my best approximation for when these will occur.
  • Please make sure that students are picked up in a timely manner.  If any students have not been picked up by 11:00 PM, the Sanford Police Department will be called to take them home.
  • Students must adhere to all Band Handbook, Millennium Middle School, and Seminole County Codes of Student Conduct.  Misbehavior at this event may result in the appropriate consequences being issued.  This may include detentions, parent conferences, referrals, and/or sanctions from band and other school events.
  • Parents are encouraged to attend!  There is an admission fee of $6 (???) to watch the game.  (Parent chaperones will not need to pay for admission.)
