Band in a Minute, 11/1/17

Posted on

Hello MMS Band Families,
Here are some quick updates that will be useful for this week in band:
  • I have temporarily suspended the Band in a Minute videos.  It takes an average of 45 minutes of production for every minute of video produced, and I was producing between 8-10 minutes of video each week.  Additionally, there were a maximum of 107 views and an average watch time of 72 seconds.  So, I will work to see how I can make it easier for me to produce the videos and make it more engaging before I resume posting them.
  • Classes will be issued a digital Assignment Sheet listing their homework for the week.  All classes have homework, which is to prepare what has been assigned in class.  This at-home practice is the only way to get better as a musician.  This forms are posted in eCampus, and the students may fill them out online rather than writing down on a piece of paper.
  • All classes have been issued a series of assignments that are located in eCampus and may be submitted beginning now.  Deadlines will be posted for these assignments later this week.
  • Clarinet MasterClass, Wednesday, November 1, 3:30-5:30PM in the band room. All clarinet players should attend and take advantage of our guest artist!!!
  • Wind Ensemble & Jazz Band will be performing in the Performing Arts Showcase on Thursday, Nov. 2 during Periods 1, 5, & 7.  Students are responsible for making up an work missed in those classes.  This event requires their formal uniform.
  • Wind Ensemble & Jazz Band will be performing in the Choices Night Presentation on Thursday, Nov. 2  from 6:15-7PM.  Students will stay after school, be fed, and then prepare for the performance. This event requires their formal uniform.
Thank you so much and have a great week!

MMS Band in a Minute 10-23-17

Sorry…still working on getting done in a minute.  The videos are 2-3 minutes long, with the exception of the MS Night Video, which is 4 minutes long.

This week’s video does include some student performances!

Good Evening all!
I hope that everyone has had a great weekend!
I am embedding below something new that I am trying: a set of short 1-2 minute videos about what is going on in band this week.  It is a link to a Youtube playlist, with videos for each level of band.  Simply click through the list to get to the class that is pertinent to you.  While each of these videos are around 2 minutes long, I hope to get things down to about a minute as things go forward.  It might be helpful, or it might not.  At any rate, I am giving it a try!  Let me know what you think!

Beginning Band Instrument Approval Packets!!!

Posted on

As Round 3 of student instrument selections were completed on Friday, students will be issued their Instrument Approval Packets on Monday, August 28!

  • These packets include the following information:
  •  a letter to the parents indicating the student’s approved choice of instrument
  • a listing of the needed instrument and accessories
  • the names & numbers of local stores where the equipment can be acquired
  • school-owned instrument availability
  • timeline for when students need materials in class

Parents should be on the lookout for this packet and use it when going out to acquire the appropriate materials. The packet can often be handed over to music store employees who will gather the needed equipment. This way, you don’t have to know anything about the materials and the store doesn’t provide you with materials that are of low quality.

Our current timeline puts us at bringing instruments for the first time on Tuesday, September 5. This gives families a week to get needed equipment so that we can get to playing some sounds!!!

The Instrument Approval Form will look something like this!

Fall Fundraiser 2017!!!

Posted on Updated on

Students kicked off the band’s Fall Fundraiser this past Tuesday in class!  Students will be selling items from the Blue Ribbon Farms Savory Sensations brochure, featuring food items like cookie dough and other baked goods.

The sale runs from August 15 to August 29!

Money raised through this sale can be applied to students’ Band Assessment for the school year ($100) or towards the rental of a school instrument ($100).

We keep approximately 40% of the money turned in as profit.  So, you can use this as a way for students to target how much to sell in order to cover the Band Assessment and/or school Instrument Rental fees.

  • $125 of product sales = $50 profit
  • $250 of product sales = $100 profit
  • $500 of product sales = $200 profit

Students can also qualify for prizes by selling 8 items.  For every 8 items sold, students earn a chance to pull a wallet from the Cash Bag.  These wallets include cash prizes and a chance to win an HD TV or a flying drone!

Families that wish to not participate in the sale of these products may send in cash or money order to be applied towards their student’s account. Please send in money in an envelope marked with:

  • Student’s First & Last Name
  • What the money is for (Band Assessment, Instrument Rental)
  • the Amount enclosed

Ask your student to see this year’s brochures and begin planning out how you can best support the band this year!

  • Special note: The school’s money collection policy prohibits the collection of money via checks.  All money must be either cash or money order (money orders made out to Millennium Middle School.)

Instrument Fitting Night a HUGE Success!!!

Posted on Updated on

Thank you to all of the fantastic parents and students who attended the Beginning Band Instrument Fitting event last night!!!  The smiles that I saw on the kids’ faces are what gets me pumped up for the classroom!  I can’t wait to get started with instruments!

The next steps involve finishing up the testing of oboe & bassoon, having students making initial decisions, and checking our instrumentation numbers.  My hope is to be able to send home Instrument Approval Packets by the end of next week!  Stay tuned for news of the students’ progress!!!
